The must have lip balm

Went to my friend’s for a bbq yesterday and one of the girls pulled out this cute little lip balm shaped like an egg.  I just have to have it, so I googled it to find out more about it and was suprised to find out that it’s 95% organic, 100% natural, and paraben and petrolatum free. It’s also packed with Vitamin E, shea butter and jojoba oil,

They’ve just released summer flavors like strawberry sorbet and lemon drop.  Can’t wait to get some for myself!

Delicious, healthy and super easy Shrimp Tacos

Ingredients

  • 1 lb of fresh shrimp, peeled, & deveined
  • 6 oz fat free Greek yogurt
  • ¼ cup chopped cilantro
  • 2 tbsp fresh lime juice
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • ½ a head of cabbage, thinly sliced (about 5 cups)
  • 8 corn tortillas
  • 4 tsp extra virgin olive oil
  • Salt and pepper to taste

Directions

Heat tortillas over medium heat in a dry skillet until warm and starting to form small brown spots. Set aside on a plate covered with a clean kitchen towel.

Mix yogurt, cayenne, lime juice, cilantro, & salt in a small bowl, set aside. Taste, if you like more spicy foods, just add more cayenne for that “kick”.

Heat two teaspoons of olive oil in a medium non-stick skillet and add cabbage.  Cook for about four minutes or until the cabbage is just barely wilted.  Season with salt and pepper and set aside.

Cut shrimp into thirds, so you have little bite size pieces.  Sauté in two teaspoons of olive oil and season with salt, pepper and a dash of cayenne pepper over medium heat just until done.  They take just a few minutes to cook… so keep an eye on them!

Build your taco!  Place a scoop of cabbage on the warmed tortillas taco, then top with shrimp, and cilantro sauce… enjoy!

Serves 4.

Cleaning your jewelry (on the cheap!)

It just happens, one day my favorite silver bracelet is nice and shiny and new, the next it looks like my grandmother’s piece that she’s had in her jewelry box for 40 years.  A few days ago, I took inventory of what needed a good cleaning and started looking online at jewelry cleaners.  $50 dollars?  And for something that’s going to take up space and get used a few times a year?  Forget it, here’s a simple way to clean your silver jewelry with stuff that’s in every household.  I just cleaned a bunch of pieces and wish I had taken before and after pictures. My Tiffany knot earrings, a gift from my friends Cheryl and Jen years ago, were so tarnished I couldn’t wear them, now they’re brand new again!

Line a small bowl (like a cereal bowl) with aluminum foil

Microwave 1 cup of water for about 1-2 minutes

Poor water into bowl

Take 1 tbs of baking soda, 1 tbs of salt and 1 tbs of dishwashing detergent and add to bowl.

Add jewelry and wait 5-10 minutes

Remove from bowel and rinse with cold water

Dry off with soft towel

It’s that easy!

How to make flowers last longer

Living in NYC, I love having fresh flowers in my apartment.  It makes me feel one with the outdoors and just brightens up a room.  I’m always trying to get them to last just a few days longer by cutting the stems, changing the water, etc, but here’s some tips some of which I’ve heard of before and some I found really surprising!  Whatever works right?

Aspirin – the old tried and true way to keep roses fresher longer.  But what I didn’t realize it you had to crush the aspirin in the water before adding the flowers…silly me

Bleach – yes, you read correctly, bleach.  Add 1/4 teaspoon per liter of vase water.  It keeps the water clear and inhibits the growth of bacteria.

Hair Spray – a quick spritz of hairspray on the undersides of the leaves and petals will preserve your flowers

Sugar & Vinegar – mix 2 tablespoons of apple cider vinegar and 2 tablespoons of sugar with the vase water before adding flowers.  Change the water mixture every few days.

Vodka – I generally like to drink my vodka, but a few drops of vodka along with a teaspoon of sugar wards off bacteria and adds nourishment that cut flowers lose.  Hey, whatever works right?

The new Tupperware party?

Yesterday I attended a Stella & Dot Trunk show party at my friend Lori’s house.  I must admit, I didn’t know what to expect, it was the first I was hearing of the company and am not one for the hard sales approach.  Stella & Dot was founded by Jessica Herrin and Blythe Harris who named the company after each of their grandmothers.  The jewelry is fun, unique and a bunch of pieces are less than $50.00.  I especially love their earrings which look really heavy but are light enough to wear all day.  And as a bonus, each piece comes in an adorable box.

The host, Kelly Sullivan, had all the jewelry laid out for us to try on (my friend Karen was even given a necklace to model during the get together).  Kelly was helpful and not the least bit pushy.  It was a fun afternoon of meeting new friends and catching up with old ones over mimosas, wine, cheese and some great looking jewelry.  Check them out at www.stelladot.com.  Also you can check Kelly’s Stella & Dot page at http://www.stelladot.com/sites/kellysullivan/profile

p.s. I got the chandelier earrings shown below in coral..can’t wait til they arrive, heard they’re one of the must haves this season!

Clean with style

Pretty cleaning gloves

When I clean, I always, always use rubber gloves (I think it’s a mindset thing).  In the past, I’ve always bought those plain, yellow, blah rubber gloves to tackle my apartment.  Not anymore!  I’ve found these cute, stylish rubber glove by Jessie Steele www.jessiesteele.com.  Believe me, no one hates cleaning more than I do, but once you put these on, it’s makes it a less daunting task.  Also check out their aprons, and pot holders!
